One shouldn't expect miracles from a $70 MFP, and one doesn't get them with the Canon Pixma MG2220 Inkjet Photo All-in-One. Print quality is fine for photos you'd tape to the refrigerator door, but not for pictures you're looking to frame. Most, but not all, prints rose to about the quality you'd expect from drugstore prints. In general, colors were a touch on the pale side, and monochrome photo showed a tint. Photo quality was slightly sub-par for an inkjet. Issues included banding (a regular pattern of faint striations), dithering (graininess), and posterization (abrupt shifts in color where they should be gradual). Graphics quality was below par, though still suitable for purposes like basic school or business reports. Text was good enough for any home, school, or typical business use short of documents like resumes with which you'd seek to impress through their visual appearance.

Overall output quality for the MG2220 was slightly below par, with text quality typical of an inkjet, and photo and graphics quality a bit below par. The Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430W zipped through the same tests at 4.3 ppm, while the Editors' Choice Kodak ESP 3.2 All-in-One Printer ($99.99 direct, 4 stars) output the tests at a 3.2 ppm clip and I recently clocked the Epson Expression Home XP-400 Small-in-One at 3.2 ppm. Both are very slow times compared with most current budget inkjets.

Print Speed The Canon Pixma MG2220 printed out our business applications suite (as timed with QualityLogic’s hardware and software) at 1.9 effective pages per minute (ppm), essentially the same speed as the MG3220 (2.0 ppm). I tested it over a USB connection with a PC running Windows Vista. The MG2220 connects directly to a computer via USB, with no network connectivity. The green LED can only display a single character at a time, and you need to refer to the printer's user manual, which you install on your PC, to make any sense of its functions beyond simply counting copies. Other buttons include setup and fit to page. To the right of the flatbed is the control panel, with start button, color and black-and-white scan buttons, a button for switching between 8.5-by-11 plain paper, 8.5-by-11 photo paper, and 4-by-6 photo paper.
